If you have an interest in Genealogy, but are new to the WWW, here are some sites which
may be of help:
UK+Ireland Genealogy provides lots of data,
assistance and links to other sites.
The Public Records Office
and the UK Family History Online
site provide excellent links
to sourcing UK historical documents. The Family Records Centre in London
houses the records of births, marriages and deaths (previously at St Catherine's House)
that have occurred since 1837. It also contains records of censuses and wills and is well
worth a visit. Copies of these documents can be ordered from the centre. From
1538 to 1837, the Church of England kept records of baptisms, marriages and
deaths in Parish registers. These registers are now kept at County Records
Offices and other local archives. Information about locally held records can be
found at the Familia site. A free
searchable database of births, marriages and deaths is being compiled by a group
of volunteers and can be accessed at FreeBMD.
The 1901 Census website is running
in test form at the moment, but appears to be working well.
The GENNAM-L mailing list (gennam-l@mail.eworld.com)
is a place for people to submit queries about certain names in order to locate others
doing similar research, etc.
Family Tree Maker, the popular home
genealogy software, has its own website. The publishers, Broderbund, invite users to
submit their databases for inclusion on CD Roms that subsequently become available for
purchase. A list of people on this database and also on other CD Roms they produce (mainly
from US public records) can be interrogated online at their Family Finder Index site.
A Chalklin-specific portion of my family tree can be found by following the Internetree
